New moms, first time or not, spend 9 months focused on taking care of themselves so the baby grows and develops perfectly. Making sure they are eating right, getting long walks in for exercise, focusing on stress management, trying their hardest to get an appropriate amount of sleep, etc. Then after the little miracle is born mom gets forgotten! Everyone that meets the new family always asks questions- “How is the new baby?” “Are they sleeping through the night?” “How are they feeding?” Your family starts greeting the baby before even acknowledging you.
My question is HOW IS MOM doing!? Her whole life has just changed, if she is a first time mom or not, her whole life has changed! Often this leads to forgetting to take care of herself. She is so focused on this beautiful bundle of joy she allows this to take priority. She is most definitely not getting enough sleep. She is most likely not exercising the way she did in the past. Her diet has most likely become a “whatever she can grab before having to feed the baby” type of diet.
Restore The Pelvic Balance
Often after birth, whether vaginally or via c-section, the mother’s pelvic biomechanics change and these changes can bring discomfort. Chiropractic can help restore the pelvic balance with similar manipulation, exercises and stretches that were used during her prenatal care.
Work On The Thoracic Spine
It is also beneficial to work on the thoracic spine due to positions during breastfeeding, bottle feeding or simply rocking and holding children. This will include symptoms such as pain between the shoulder blades, tightness/stiffness in neck and shoulders, difficulty with taking a deep breath without pain, and feeling of improper posture when sitting, standing, lifting, and/or bending.
Nutritional Counseling
Nutritional counseling post-partum is imperative. A woman who is breastfeeding her newborn is directly affecting the immune system and gut development of her growing child. There needs to be a dramatic level of respect for this. Understanding from your babies symptoms what can be done in your diet can alleviate your child’s reflux is profound. Also trying to have adequate nutrients for your baby as well as trying to decrease the baby weight you have put on is difficult. Clinical Psychotherapist Referral
The referral of a clinical psychotherapist may also be needed to help with the drastic change your life just took. This is never something to be ashamed of and we can help you find help. The balancing act of your hormones beginning to regulate after the birthing process takes time and energy that may need guidance, understanding and support.
It is my mission to put a stop to this vicious cycle. After giving birth and going through this major change in her life she needs an overabundance of support and help healing. Healing not only her body but her mind as well.
