Whiplash Q&A

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury that can occur after the neck has experienced a sudden and forceful back-and-forth motion (like the cracking of a whip). The motion causes muscles and ligaments in the neck to stretch or tear, and can cause parts of the spine to move out of alignment. It is often the result of a car accident, but can also happen during a sports injury or other trauma.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Whiplash can have both short- and long-term effects. The most common symptoms are:

  • Neck pain and stiffness; it may worsen with movement
  • Restricted movement or loss of range of motion in the neck
  • Headaches
  • Pain or stiffness in the shoulders, upper back, or arms
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Sometimes, people also experience:

  • Blurry vision
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Difficulty concentrating or with memory
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Irritability or depression

How can chiropractic care help treat whiplash?

Dr. Nuzzi helps relieve the pain and heal the injury for patients who have experienced whiplash. She begins with an examination of the entire spine. Based on findings from the examination and the patient’s specific needs, Dr. Nuzzi develops a treatment plan using one or more of the following treatment techniques:

  • Chiropractic adjustment: Dr. Nuzzi will gently move the joints in the areas experiencing stiffness back into alignment. This allows for increased mobility and healing.
  • Muscle relaxation and stimulation: Stretches are used to relieve tension in the muscles. Certain pressure points are sometimes also activated using finger pressure techniques to relieve additional pain.
  • McKenzie Exercises: A set of exercises designed to help with disc irritation or bulging caused by whiplash. Dr. Nuzzi will teach you the exercises so that you can continue the healing process at home.

The goal of any chiropractic treatment plan is to alleviate pain and bring the body back into alignment to regain full range of motion. Treating whiplash with chiropractic care can help ensure that current symptoms do not evolve into chronic pain. Dr. Nuzzi is experienced in helping whiplash patients return to their natural state and find relief after what can be a traumatizing experience.
